Question

Will Google send me a gift when I paint my ads pink and provide my street address on all pages?

Answer

Google current policy is to sterilise any advertising that is not its own, so by turning your adverts links pink (nofollowing) is the safest course of action if you and your advertisers are agreeable. While there have been many high profile penalties and mud throwing regarding paid links only a small portion of sites have actually been penalised. So while Google might not send you a gift presuming your pages are already ranking it is unlikely to penalise you regardless of which colour you choose your links to be. Google is one large data vacuum cleaners around, providing it with juicy details as your physical address you would feel should be rewarded with a gift and to a certain extent it does provide a general boost to local and regional rankings (.co.uk, .co.fr) however it is one of just a few methods to get in such search engines another reason to provide your address would be to provide a level of trust. How much trust your address provides is of course debatable but it could become an ever increasing factor, the web is not such an anonymous place as it once was.

There is no need however to place such information on every page though it should be accessible through out the site. However if you were looking for a physical gift then you may have to be more creative Google Public relations team on the whole have a good sense of humour just look at paid links. Some of there most interesting gifts have included;

  • A superman outfit sent to a man Google Transit expected to cross a multilane motorway
  • Pain Killers to an Adword user who was getting a headache with all the changes
  • A Pen to their rivals at Ask after they claimed their Google pen had run dry

Depending on the type of site your painting pink and leaving your address lying around on could potentially result in unpleasant visitors. This in a twisted way could be considered gifts from Google!
